PETERBILT ROLLS OUT THE NEW MODEL 348

IDEAL FOR CONSTRUCTION, PETROLEUM DELIVERY, REFUSE AND UTILITY VOCATIONS

2010 Pete 348

DENTON, Texas   (October 19, 2009)Today, Peterbilt Motors Company unveiled the new Model 348 designed to exceed the rigid demands of Class 7 and Class 8 specialty application market that requires rugged durability and a wide range of option content. The Model 348 represents a multi-dimensional performer with a GVW beginning at 33,000 lbs. and optional capacity ratings to suit almost any speciality vocation.

“The new Model 348 is the answer for customers in key applications such as construction, petroleum delivery, refuse and utility vocations,” said Bill Jackson, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President.
“The Model 348 is one of the most versatile performers in its class, and is backed by the industry’s strongest dealer network with outstanding serviceability, durability, style, and performance that is synonymous with Peterbilt.”

The all-new interior enhances the vehicle’s durability, reliability and value through its “in-mold” color process that imbeds the color permanently into the material to virtually eliminate peeling, scratches, scuffs and fading that can occur in harsh operating environments.

Additionally, the ergonomically designed driver display package features backlit gauges that are easy to read and simple to understand and includes key vehicle performance data located at the top of the dash for optimal viewing. For increased driver comfort and convenience, a new HVAC system not only improves air flow, but also reduces maintenance costs.

The Model 348 is available in truck or tractor configurations and offers critical vocational options such as FEPTO, REPTO and application specific transmissions including a hybrid configuration designed for utility service. The Model 348 is available with two powerful and fuel efficient PACCAR engines.
In the hybrid configuration, the PACCAR PX-6 engine (260 hp) offers the highest horsepower to weight ratio in the industry while the PACCAR PX-8 engine (240 – 360 hp) provides 1,050 lb-ft or torque for heavier loads.

The Model 348 is constructed of an all-aluminum cab that is lightweight for fuel efficiency and corrosion resistant for durability. Exterior enhancements have resulted in significant visibility improvements.
The new lowered and slanted side window beltline which increases the view outside the passenger side window, as well as a lowered dash sightline, has contributed to an overall 17 percent improvement in side window visibility providing a better view around the jobsite.

For serviceability, removable dash panels provide easy access to electrical and HVAC components. A new electrical system offers proven multiplex technology that simplifies wiring behind the dash and facilitates troubleshooting. The Model 348 is available exclusively with air brakes for heavy duty configurations and a wide range of suspension and vocational options in both single and tandem axle configurations.

Waterproof, surface-mount LED ideal for exterior lighting needs

Larson Electronics’ magnalight.com adds surface mount, waterproof 12/24 volt directional LED flood light for small area illumination.

With its brushed aluminum finish and concealed mounting, the LEDCL-280 LED light can be used in the sleeper, and the back of the cab, or illuminate instrument panels in remote area equipment rooms.

Drawing only 280mA on 12 volts, the LEDCL-280 LED  was initially designed with aesthetics in mind with its brushed aluminum finish and concealed mounting method.  However, with an IP65 rating and articulating LED light head, this low amp draw LED light is applicable to a wide variety of industrial and military applications, where a directional wide area flood light is useful.

When installed at 20 feet in height, the LEDCL-280 covers and area 25 feet in diameter with approximately 10-15 foot candles of light.

“This is a small powerful LED light that the operator can position to provide bright, white light that exceeds the output of a 100 watt incandescent bulb,” said Rob Bresnahan.  “These LED lights are designed for wet area usage and offers some advantages in small work areas, storage facilities and other areas where operators want to conserve power but need bright white light to inspect instrument panels, breaker boxes and other equipment.”

CUSTOM RIG SPOTLIGHT

WORKING MAN’S PhD

A perfect name for Brian O’Leary’s tribute to the truck drivers of America

By Todd Dills

Owner-operator Brian O’Leary has accomplished more than most in his 37-year trucking career: in addition to nearly 4 million safe miles completed, he was named the Truckload Carriers Association’s 2004 Company Equipment Driver of the Year and the Colorado Motor Carriers Association’s 2007 Driver of the Year.

But for him, it’s his latest accomplishment as an owner-operator – a custom build-out of a 1999 Peterbilt 379 stretched to 300 inches – that makes it all worthwhile.

He’s crafted the Pete as a tribute to those he most respects in trucking, his fellow drivers and owner-operators.

“It was a wrecked truck” when he found it, he says of Working Man’s PhD, which comes complete with Aaron Tippin’s signature on the back of the sleeper – the truck is named after a famous Tippin song.

O’Leary located it five years ago at the repair and restoration shop of some friends and colleagues in Utah. He was still driving for Western Distributing then, though, and it was tough to find the time to really put the work that was needed into the truck.

About “two years ago,” he says, all that changed. “I decided I needed to get serious and get this truck built.”

The pictures tell most of the story, but dovetailing neatly with the 2005 story on O’Leary that appeared in Custom Rigs‘ sister magazine Truckers News upon his winning the TCA award is the fact that he’s gone back to his trucking roots, heavy-hauling with Hersch Trucking, to free up time to complete the build.

It made its show debut as part of the Mid-America Trucking Show, and you can catch it on the road in the near future: Other than memorializing the many men and women who’ve worked as drivers over the years, says O’Leary, “my intent has always been to work the truck in my own trucking company hauling enclosed classic cars, which I have previously done.”

Give the horn a pull next time you see him. louisville-2009-061

CO-PILOT GPS AVAILABLE FOR CADEC

CADEC INTEGRATES COPILOT TRUCK GPS

Partnership With ALK Technologies Brings Spoken Turn-by-Turn Directions and Truck-Specific Routing to Cadec’s Series 100 On-Board Computer Systems

BALTIMORE, MD–(Marketwire – October 19, 2009) – From the 2009 IFDA Distribution Solutions Conference, Cadec Global, a leading provider of advanced fleet management solutions, announced today a new partnership with GPS navigation specialist ALK Technologies to help trucking fleets optimize routes, reduce out-of-route mileage and lower fuel consumption.

Now Cadec Mobius TTS® and PowerVue™ customers have the option to ease strain on their driving teams by adding ALK’s CoPilot® Truck GPS navigation to their Cadec 100 Series On-Board Computers (OBCs). Cadec’s Mobius TTS and PowerVue fleet management solutions help trucking fleets monitor driver behavior, improve safety and reduce costs.

Providing clear, voice-guided, turn-by-turn instruction and a choice of visual mapping styles, ALK’s CoPilot Truck is a hands-free, truck-legal GPS navigation system that takes the guesswork out of delivery by providing the most efficient routing. In addition, it safely broadens the geographic reach of each driver.

While a standalone module for manual address selection by the driver is available, it’s when CoPilot Truck is integrated with Cadec’s driver workflow solution that it becomes an effective business tool.

Integrated solution improves efficiency, safety

Cadec has fully integrated CoPilot Truck into its fleet management platform so fleets can run it right on their Windows CE-based Cadec OBCs. This integration enables Cadec customers to send updated routes to Cadec OBCs, where drivers can automatically access the updates along with turn-by-turn navigation and voice prompts from a single system. Delivery destinations are automatically sent to CoPilot Truck, allowing drivers to confirm their next destination based on the integrated routing detail.

Drivers use their Cadec OBC to select the next destination from a list of due deliveries. Upon selection and confirmation of the destination, the CoPilot Truck GPS application is launched. Taking into account factors such as total vehicle length, width, weight and consignment, CoPilot Truck then plots a suitable route from dock-to-dock, providing full, turn-by-turn navigation.

During the trip, additional information on screen provides the driver with the distance to the destination, an Estimated Time of Arrival and visual instruction on their next maneuver. Upon arrival, the device will toggle back into the Mobius TTS or PowerVue application so that the driver can complete the delivery on site.

Frank Moreno, Cadec’s Vice President of Marketing & Product Management, said, “Fleets are more concerned than ever with efficiency — combining fleet management with detailed, dock-to-dock navigation can go a long way toward reducing unnecessary mileage and costs. With the addition of CoPilot Truck GPS navigation from ALK Technologies, we can greatly improve driver efficiency. Automated route planning sent directly to the driver’s on-board computer can eliminate driver-entry errors and potentially costly routing mistakes.”

Dan Popkin, Vice President, CoPilot Sales, ALK Technologies said, “We are delighted to announce our partnership with Cadec, which is already delivering successful results to joint customers. By offering integrated CoPilot Truck navigation with Mobius TTS and PowerVue, Cadec is able to draw on ALK’s 30-plus years of experience in the transportation and logistics industry and provide enterprises with a GPS navigation solution that can significantly improve efficiency and safety through a reduction in accidents.”

Cadec will demonstrate this integrated solution at this week’s IFDA Distribution Solutions Conference, taking place at the Baltimore Convention Center from October 19-21, at booth #109. For more information on Cadec fleet management solutions for food distribution, visit http://www.cadec.com/customers/foodGrocery.php.
