Continental Tires Under Freightliners

Continental Tires Named

Original Equipment

for Freightliner M2 Trucks

FORT MILL, S.C. (May 12, 2009) – Continental Tire North America, Inc. and Freightliner Trucks are pleased to announce that Continental tires will now become standard original equipment on all Freightliner Business Class® M2 medium-duty trucks.

In addition, Continental’s lineup of commercial vehicle tires will become optional on other Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) brands including Western Star trucks, Thomas Built buses, Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation chassis and all other Freightliner vehicles, said DTNA executives. Freightliner Trucks is a division of DTNA.

The addition of Continental’s truck tires to the already impressive list of original equipment on the Business Class M2 trucks completes Freightliner’s commitment to quality and performance, said Melissa Clausen, Freightliner Trucks’ director of product marketing.

“Continental’s heavy steer tires complement our proven engineering for the Business Class M2 trucks,” Clausen said. “The M2 is designed for maximum reliability and fuel efficiency, and this is what we found in Continental’s product offering. With long original mileage and capabilities for on or off-road applications, Continental tires will be able to handle the demands of our M2 customers for a reliable tire that can stand up to their toughest driving conditions.”

Freightliner customers will soon be able to choose from new offerings from Continental to meet their truck tire needs. Continental will be launching a redesigned regional steer tire, the HSR2, which replaces Continental’s best-selling HSR, introduced in 2002.

Produced in Continental’s Mt. Vernon, Ill. award-winning manufacturing plant, the HSR2 (Heavy Steer Regional) is set to maintain Continental’s industry benchmark in the regional steer application. At 23/32” depth, the updated tread compound is designed to increase mileage by 15 percent over the current HSR and improves cut and chip resistance for optimal performance.

Freightliner customers for waste hauling, construction and other on/off highway service applications will also soon be able to choose Continental’s newest tire for urban needs, the HSU2 (Heavy Steer Urban) which replaces the HSU model. The HSU2 is also produced in Continental’s Mt. Vernon, Ill. plant and offers maximum life through its 26/32” deep rib design, which is 8 percent deeper than the HSU and puts more “rubber on the road.” The HSU2’s enhanced bead design enables 10,000 pound capacity at 65 mph.

“Continental is pleased to have been chosen as the strategic supplier partner to Freightliner Trucks and the brands of DTNA, especially at a time when we can offer them our newest heavy steer tires,” said Tom Fanning, Continental’s director of original equipment sales – The Americas. “The long mileage and fuel efficiency of our truck tires, paired with our innovative technologies in alignment tracking, stone ejection and chip-resistant treads will help keep drivers of DTNA trucks on the road longer.”

Available in multiple cab configurations, Freightliner’s Business Class M2 medium duty trucks support a wide range of bodies and chassis-mounted equipment, making them ideal for a wide variety of applications such as towing, pickup and delivery, food and beverage distribution, emergency services, utility or garbage collection.

Custom Big Rigs In Florida

10:24 am in Event Articles, Home, Shows / Events by bruce-smith

widlwood-75-chrome09_485-web-leadDumps  clean house at Overdrive’s Pride & Polish in Wildwood, Florida

By Bruce W. Smith

Friday evening’s light competition should have been a good indication of which custom rigs were going to lay claim to the majority of Overdrive’s Pride & Polish awards hardware.

Rigs drawing the largest crowd of spectators and cameras during these night displays of lights always seem to be at the top of the winner’s list when all is said and done. The 75 Chrome Shop’s annual April truck beauty show in Wildwood, Florida, was no exception.

What was a bit of a surprise is the rigs drawing to most appreciative looks and the largest percentage of camera clicks were not the old-school bobtails or box van combos, but rather dumps.  That’s right, dumps.

Two of the nicest examples of attention to detail being Todd and Beth Roccapriore’s chopped ’93, a purple/black Peterbilt 379 Extended Hood with a sparkling, raised ’09 Mac dump trailer, and the brown/tan ’07 Peterbilt 379/’07 CPS end dump combo, King Ranch, shown by Brad Johnson and Jake Lindamood. Both rigs beckoned attention from all corners of 75 Chrome Shop’s 130-space parking area.

Todd Roccapriore’s dump combo, used regularly to haul contaminated debris for his wife Beth’s company, Clean Slate Environmental, Inc, out of Hebron, Connecticut, cleaned house in multiple judging categories, hauling away Best of Show Working Combo, Mobile Delvac Working Class Engine, Combo Custom Paint & Graphics or Murals, and Combo Lights classes.

No surprise, either. He and friend Denis Chupron put in about 170 man-hours cleaning and detailing the dump combo, arriving in Wildwood four days before the judging started.

widlwood-75-chrome09_209-lindamoodJake Lindamood, vice president of Lindamood Demolition, out of Irving, Texas, has a similar philosophy. He and Brad Johnson spent dozens of hours detailing King Ranch – a dump combo used to carry debris in and around the Dallas area. The reward for their attention to detail – and for the rig’s unique “King Ranch” motif – was winning Truk Rodz Best Theme and Best Limited Mileage Paint (Combo) and taking third in the tough Limited Mileage Combo class.

The most impressive fleet showing, hands down, was that of Taylor Transport.  They deadheaded three rigs in from their Georgia base to compete in Overdrive’s annual Pride & Polish in Wildwood.

Between the three rigs they added a lot of hardware to the company trophy case: Best of Show Working Bobtail; Best Limited Mileage Bobtail; a tie for Second in Working Combo 2001-Newer; Second in Interior, Cab Only; Second in Mobil Delvac Working Engine Class; Second and Third in Bobtail Lights; Third in Combo Lights; and Pride & Polish Best Limited Mileage Interior.widlwood-75-chrome09_175-rj-martin

To read more about the event and see more pictures of many of these rigs, look for Custom Rigs’ Summer issue due to hit newsstands in mid-August. (Winner’s list is below.)  -CR

HOW-TO: Diamond-Plate Floor

6:18 am in Articles, Home, How-To's, Technical, Web Extras by bruce-smith

lead-image1Installing aluminum diamond-plate flooring brightens up the cab of any custom rig

By Bruce W. Smith

Ten years and a million miles do a wear-and-tear number on just about anything in a working rig. Just look down by your feet. The floor covering, which was once pristine, probably looks as if half those miles were driven over it.

Even if you’re diligent keeping the cab floor clean, years of exposure to extreme temperatures and climate conditions take their toll, as does moisture from wet boots, spilled drinks, dropped burgers and other hazards of everyday use. A less-than-spotless-looking floor is perfectly acceptable in a regular working rig. But in a working-class show truck, never.

One solution for a cab floor for both work and show is diamond-plate aluminum. Diamond-plate withstands the rigors of hard use, wears well, is relatively easy to install and requires very little work to maintain. Also, installing a new floor cover is usually the first of many interior upgrades to follow.

We put a new covering in a ’98 379 Pete, replacing a once-beautiful laminate wood floor that had succumbed to thediamondplate-floor-how-to_0280 working elements. The truck was being given a second life, so a little more show and less go was the order of the day. A pre-cut, two-piece diamond-pate aluminum floor kit ($575) from the Chrome Shop Mafia was the perfect place to begin the truck’s refurbishing process.

Replacing a floor cover with diamond-plate is easy. But beware: It’s an all-day project. Everything north of the original factory metal cab floor has to be removed and the floor itself cleaned.

The good news is that the time spent is rewarding in the long run. The photos below show the step-by-step involved. (Click on an image to see it full-size.) – CR
